Statistics show October is most dangerous month

According to the Michigan pedestrian car accident statistics, October has been the most dangerous month for pedestrians in Michigan for 9 of the last 10 years (2014-2023), according to Michigan Traffic Crash Facts. In 2023, October accounted for 11.5% of all pedestrian-involved auto accidents for the year.

Why is October so dangerous for people walking?

There are several factors that likely explain why the Michigan pedestrian car accident statistics show October 2023 (and every year prior) being the most dangerous for people traveling by foot:

  • The days are getting shorter and it starts to get dark earlier.
  • More people are out and about at dusk as they take advantage of the last few weeks of nicer Michigan weather.
  • Halloween and many fall events, from college football Saturdays to the many fall festival events lead to more people on the streets. Many of these fall activities also tend to have higher alcohol consumption and thus more impaired drivers behind the wheel and bad judgment among walkers on streets.
  • Ongoing distractions for both drivers and walkers are compounded by the shorter days and limited daylight, further impairing their ability to safely drive and/or walk along or cross streets.

Statistics show “crossing not at an intersection” is most deadly for pedestrians

Every year between 2014 and 2023, “crossing not at an intersection” has been the most deadly thing that pedestrians do before a fatal pedestrian-car accident. It has accounted for 24.1% (2018) to 40.6% (2016) of all pedestrian fatalities caused by a motor vehicle accident in a given year.

Statistics for most dangerous time of day
