In advance of the Fieldfisher Pain Conference this coming Thursday. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our distinguished speakers for being so willing to share their knowledge with us, and ABI solutions for masterminding the day. I would also like apologise to those delegates that might have been accused of sneaking off to the cinema instead of to a serious Conference.
What is pain? A familiar but deceptively simple term. It is a symptom; an experience; an emotion; a sensation; a disease. It is associated with physical, psychological, social and even economic factors but no definition can encapsulate the many nuances of this complex phenomenon. The impact of pain or chronic pain on people’s lives is an intensely subjective experience. It can range from minor restrictions to complete loss of independence. It is therefore vitally important that we learn as much as we can about the different types of pain, their aetiology, presentations, red flags and treatments.
Thursday’s conference is a chance to hear from experts, all working at the cutting edge of their field. I hope that we will be able to use their knowledge to reflect on what we do and more importantly to consider what we could do differently to help our clients and patients cope with this life-destroying condition. We will also explore the interplay between pain and psychology, as we strive to find a balance between an endless quest for a physical diagnosis and an acknowledgment of the importance of the numerous other causes of chronic pain.
The aim of the day is to elucidate and educate us on this difficult topic. I hope that it will help us work together to achieve the best possible recovery for our clients and patients and ensure that we do whatever we can to improve their quality of life.
The 50 Shades of Pain conference takes place at Riverbank House, London Bridge, London, this coming Thursday 19th March.
