One person was killed and four others were injured in a car accident in Beverly Hills. According to a Canyon News report, the fatal accident occurred early morning on June 6, 2016 at the intersection of La Brea Avenue and San Vicente Boulevard. LAPD officials said investigators are looking into whether one of the drivers was intoxicated or ran a red light at the intersection. Paramedics transported four people including three men and one woman to area hospitals.
KTLA reported that witnesses saw one vehicle run the red light and broadside an SUV at the intersection. One witness said the driver of the sedan was going at a high rate of speed. There were no skid marks on the roadway indicating that the driver attempted to stop. Officials don’t believe street racing was a factor. The investigation is ongoing.

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2013 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities and only one injury reported as a result of car crashes in the city of Beverly Hills. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 585 people died and 50,817 were injured due to traffic accidents during the same year. Also, countywide, 217 fatalities and 4,251 injuries were reported due to DUI collisions.

Based on this news report, officials suspect that one of the drivers was under the influence or may have run a red light. Both are violations of the law. Under California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a), it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/ or drugs.
Also, California Vehicle Code 21453 states: “A driver facing a steady circular red signal alone shall stop at a marked limit line, but if none, before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown.”
